Your present circumstances
don't determine where you can go;
they merely determine where you start.

About Alex

Coping with emotional pain like anxiety, depression, or hurt often feels like a battle between you and yourself. Perhaps you are disliking yourself for your very experience of going through what you are going through--for feeling the feelings you are having.

Or maybe, you find yourself locked in pain or frustration towards someone or something else, beyond your control.

Either way, the cost is so high to you—your emotional and perhaps even physical well-being are suffering.

In our moments of pain, there are tremendous opportunities to heal and grow.  And if there is one thing I have learned in 20 years of doing this work, it is this:

You need you right now.

This is a time when you need yourself the most, to bring your full resources forward to meet whatever circumstance you find yourself in at this moment. I work with you to turn this around--to find ways to become an ally to yourself during your time of pain.

I have helped countless men, women, and couples over the years make empowering personal and relationship changes in their lives.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is regularly seeing my clients make remarkable changes in themselves that they didn't think were possible.

To me, therapy is a caring place where we work together to help you get relief from emotional pain while also building your inner resources. In our meetings, you will find me to be an active therapist, listening deeply and responding throughout our discussion. I will often suggest active homework assignments and strategies for you to practice in between our appointments.

Therapy enhances your psychological flexibility,
and therefore your possibilities.

As you grow through our working together, you will find you have more of yourself available to meet your life circumstances. What used to scare you no longer does--or at least it no longer holds you back.

And as you begin to carve out new choices for yourself, that's where life responds with new experiences and possibilities. I invite you to think of therapy as a kind of quest that we jointly enter together.

Education and Training

My education includes a Masters Degree in Social Work from McGill University, with a clinical specialization. I am also a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) and have been practicing for 20 years.

I am well trained in a variety of orientations to counselling, but my expertise lies in Psychodynamic, Interpersonal Process Psychotherapy, and Satir Systemic Therapy.

My couple therapy work draws on these approaches and is also draws from Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) a leading edge approach of helping couples to build stronger relationships.

I am also certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which is a well-established and highly effective method for working with people who have experienced trauma.

These methods are particularly well suited to clients who are struggling with recurring patterns in their lives that they would like to change.

Teaching about psychotherapy has also been a passion of mine and I have taught extensively over the years at the following post-secondary institutions: SFU, UBC Robson Square, and Mount Royal University.
